50 Years, 50 Titans: Jacquelyn Sagasta

Heather Scibetta

Some Titans join our team as the littlest members just keep swimming all the way through college.  A Titan swimmer since she was in kindergarten is our next alumni highlight is: Jacquelyn Sagasta.

Jacquie’s early years on Titans helped prepare her for her successes on the Kenmore West High School swim team starting in just 7thgrade. After high school she went on to attend Canisius College, where she majored in environmental science and animal behavior, ecology, and conservation (ABEC), and competed on their swim team. She currently resides in downtown Buffalo and is working as an environmental scientist for a consulting firm.

From all of her years on our team Jacquie can easily recall Titans memories from way back when she was 7 years old. She fondly remembers a Stingrays meet, and it was the first time she had ever been put in a relay. Jacquie and her three teammates really wanted to win a medal. She had to swim a 25 breaststroke for her leg of the relay, she was so overly excited that she was disqualified the relay three different times (false started, didn’t touch the wall with two hands, and flutter kicked). The officials didn’t have the heart to tell her and made Scott and Tim do it. When she showed up to practice the following Monday, Scott and Tim had presented all 4 swimmers with gold medals, and on the bags they wrote “The 8 & Under Wonder Relay.”

Quick Q&A with Jacquie:

Q: When did you first join Titans?

A: I first joined Titans when I was just 5 years old, back when the levels were still colors instead of numbers.

Q: What is your favorite memory about being a Titan?

A: My favorite memories come from swim meets. Not the actual swimming part, but getting to see friends from other swim teams that I only got to see a few times every year. Also, going to "joe mama's" restaurant in Pittsburgh after every meet there with the team.

Q: What was the one event or stroke your dreaded swimming?

A: I always dreaded the 400 IM. There was absolutely nothing fun about that.

We could not agree more about the 400 IM Jacquie! Thank you for sharing your memories with us. Were you also a swimmer on the "8&U Wonder Relay"?  Let us know in the comments!

And don't forget to RSVP for our 50th Anniverary Celebrartion on 7/23/21.  It is going to be an amazing opportunity to visit with Titans from all 50 years and celebrate our wonderful family:  Titans 50th Anniversary Celebration RSVP
