Time to introduce you to another past swimmer and current member of our Titans family, Katie Hufnagel.

Katie started swimming with the Titans back in 1980, when the team was known as the Seahawks. This was before the AFC was built, so they all crammed into the pool at Ben Franklin School.

Katie grew up in the Town of Tonawanda so after the AFC opened she worked as a Lifeguard and Supervisor there. She attended Holy Angels Academy for high school where she, of course, was on the swim team. She continued her swim career into her college years at Canisius.

She never stopped her love of swim and continued to coach. She could be found coaching at many Neumann Catholic League teams such as Blessed Sacrament, St. John the Baptist, and St. Greg’s. Katie also coached for her alma mater, Holy Angels for 4 years.

Katie’s three children follow in her swimming footsteps. All are current Titans: Christopher is a senior going to Niagara. He first joined Titans in 2007, Megan in 2013 and Derek in 2017.

Fun Facts about Katie:

  • While coaching at Holy Angels, Katie first met Coach Scott while he did a quick coaching stint at Mount St. Mary Academy (Holy Angels rival)
  • Katie is still on the pool deck, you will always see her officiating at Titans meets as a USA Swimming Official.
  • Her favorite stroke is the Butterfly.
  • She was also a synchronized swimmer and continued on to coach the Town of Tonawanda Aquettes.
  • Her daughter Megan is the youngest Titans to ever to be in a USA swim meet at 4 years old and she did the 25 back.

Quick Q&A with Katie:

Q: When did you become a member of the Titan family?*
A: 1980

Q: What is your favorite Titan memory?*
A: Outdoor swim meets at Brighton and Lincoln.

Q: What is your least favorite stroke or event?*
A: 200 Back

We are extremely grateful that Katie’s love for swimming and our club continues on as a current member of our Board of Directors. If you see us promoting a fundraiser or posting some fun trivia on social media, there is no doubt Katie is the one spinning the wheel.

Since team registration opened in September, the Titans have welcomed 45 new swimmers to our Club! What an amazing testament to our team’s ability to thrive and grow during this unprecedented time. We are grateful for use of the Aquatic Center, the support of the Town and our dedicated coaches who have allowed us to keep doing what we love most – SWIM!

At this weekend’s Time Trial, we begin distribution of our Welcome Family kits. Each family will receive a bag containing an FAQ which is specific to each Level. The FAQ includes answers to our most common questions and well as contact information for coaches. Of course, we’ve included some Titans swag which we hope our swimmers enjoy! We didn’t want to wait another week to talk about this next Titan. Especially since he one of the people you immediately think of when our club is mentioned.

This week’s featured Titan, Tim Bennett

Coach Tim started coaching for Titans in 1995 when the team had only 75 swimmers. Today he is the Age Group Coordinator for over 200 members and you can currently find him coaching our level 4 and level 6 swimmers.

Not only has Tim help grow the team in size but with talent and skill too. Since 1995, Titans have won several district championships, sent countless swimmers to the Eastern Zone Championships, Super Sectional Meets, Junior National, and Senior National Meets. We have had Zone Champions, National top 16, National Top 10 swimmers, and broken numerous district records, and Coach Tim was part of it all.

Some fun facts about Coach Tim:

  • • Graduated from Buffalo State College and University at Buffalo
  • • His best stroke is Freestyle.
  • • While swimming for Buffalo State, he set the school records in the 200, 500, 1000, 1650 freestyle events!
  • • Coach Tim has been recognized as the Age Group Coach of the Year by the American Swim Coaches Association three times

Ask any of his swimmers what they think of Coach Tim and they all will give you the same answer – his enthusiasm motivates them to swim their best. Whether it is before a meet leading the team cheer or encouraging them during practices, his positive upbeat attitude is contagious to his swimmers!

Quick Q&A with Coach Tim:

Q: When did you become a member of the Titan family?*
A: Began coaching June 1995.

Q: What is your favorite Titan memory?*
A: The Donnarumma family hosting a Titans baby shower, in their home, for my wife 16 years ago.

Q: What is your least favorite stroke or event?*
A: Any length of breaststroke!

Raise your hand if Coach Tim was part of your Titan journey!

Continuing our 50 years, 50 Titans our next spotlight is not only part of our past but also very present in our club today as well: Nicole Szaflarski

Nicole is one of the newest members to join the Town of Tonawanda Titans Board of Directors.

But did you know she was a Titan herself AND back then it was her mom who was on the Board of Directors? (Check out that awesome Bills sweatshirt and retro swim cap!)

Currently a student at Capella University majoring in Project Management and a graduate of Kenmore East, Nicole still resides in the Town of Tonawanda. She has transferred her love for all things outdoors, hiking and of course swim to her daughter Kylie. Kylie is following in mom’s footsteps as a level 5 Titan. She is developing a fierceness for racing, love of Titans, and a passion for swim.

We love that Nicole has come full circle with our club and are thankful for her dedication and commitment to the blue and green.

Quick Q&A with Nicole:

Q: When did you become a member of the Titan family?
A: In 1997, when I was 8 years old. I swam all withTitans through my high school years, so 8 years in total.

Q: What is your favorite Titan memory?
Being part of the team and the Titans family. Making so many great friendships with my teammates and then passing these opportunities onto my daughter to see how much she loves Titans too.

Q: What is your least favorite stroke or event?
A: I always dreaded swimming the 200 IM. I had a love hate relationship with that event my entire Titans career. The funny part is my daughter is ready and looking forward to swimming that race!
